Some days the way forward is clear for miles. Other days, we can’t see our hand in front of our face.
I used to think this meant I’d done something wrong, that I was lost, or that I needed to push harder to find my way out. What I’ve learned is that a lack of a clear path forward isn’t an obstacle. It’s an invitation to let go of the need to know.
Not Knowing Is Part of the Journey.
We spend so much of our lives trying to work things out, find answers and understand why things happen as they do. We want to know where we are going, what comes next and how everything will turn out.
We don’t learn and grow from everything being straightforward or having all the answers laid out before us. It is through uncertainty, challenges and the moments when we cannot see the way forward that we discover things about ourselves we might never otherwise have known.
So, not knowing is part of the journey. It invites us to let go of what we think we need to know and trust ourselves to find our way.
What Surrender Really Means
When we can’t see ahead, the instinct is to hold on tighter: to control, to plan, to figure it all out. But Surrender asks something different of us.
Surrender is not giving up, abandoning the journey, or doing nothing. It is letting go of the need to control how the journey unfolds or to see the whole path ahead. It is loosening our grip on the map and allowing ourselves to be present with where we are, trusting that we don’t need to have all the answers right now.
When we stop struggling to make everything happen according to our expectations, we create space to listen, reflect and recognise what feels right for us, and to find our way one step at a time.
If You’re Standing in the Fog Today
So, if you find yourself standing in the fog today, unable to see what lies ahead, perhaps you can give yourself permission to simply be where you are.
Pause when you need to. Reflect. Regroup. Take time out. Trust that the way forward will show itself to you. When it does, take the next step without needing the whole road to be visible first. You will know where you are and what to do with that.
Breathe. Let go of what you cannot control.
You don’t have to see the whole road to keep moving forward.
Sometimes, the greatest act of trust is to Surrender the need to know, and allow the journey to unfold.
Where in your life are you being asked to Surrender and trust the next step?
Go well and go in peace
